Hear a Book Service is a non - profit organisation based in Hobart serving people with Print Disabilities throughout Australia and New Zealand.

History of Hear A Book

From its beginning in 1972, the Hear A Book organisation has grown to become a prominent analogue audio book producer, organizing the narration and distribution of over 12,000 audio books titles. As the first service to introduce audio books for the Blind and Print Disabled into the public library system around Australia , it allowed more content to be used by the print disabled community than ever before.

In recognition of the loyal band of volunteers and staff who have contributed to the proud history of Hear A Book, Vision Australia will continue to supply replacement book cassettes and existing titles until the analogue technology is no longer available.

Vision Australia have also committed to transforming some of this existing catalogue into DAISY books for continued reading by the print disabled community.  The new digital collection will be titled ‘The Hear A Book Collection’ and made available via the Vision Australia Information Library Service.

All books have been recorded by volunteers in their own homes, and copyright permissions granted to people with print disabilities.  Books are not available for direct sale to the general public due to copyright restrictions, however can be purchased by individuals with a print disability and by libraries serving the print disabled community.

How to obtain Hear A Book tapes

PRINT DISABILITY: Definition.

Because of the inconsistent definition of this term in Australia the Round Table on Information Access for People with Print Disabilities has developed the following description.
People with print disabilities are those who cannot obtain access to information in a print form because they;

  1. are Blind or Vision Impaired; or
  2. have physical disabilities which limit their ability to hold or manipulate information in a printed form; or
  3. have perceptual or other disabilities which limit their ability to follow a line of print or which affect their concentration; or
  4. cannot comprehend information in a printed form due to insufficient literacy or language skills.

Hear A Book and all major providers subscribe to this statement.
